College calls hustings in advance of General Election

Four candidates jostling for the Barrow and Furness MP’s seat will go head to head for the student vote at a Question Time-style event at Barrow Sixth Form a week before the General Election.

The prospective parliamentary candidates have been invited to a hustings at the Rating Lane campus to face questions on Thursday 5th December from 12noon.

The panel will include Loraine Birchall (Liberal Democrat), Simon Fell (Conservative), Chris Altree (Labour) and Gerard McGrath (Brexit Party). Green Party candidate Chris Loynes is unable to attend due to work commitments.

Students and staff from both the Rating Lane campus and Channelside campuses of Furness College have been invited with entry on a first-come first-served basis as a capacity crowd is expected.

It will be co-chaired by student Rebecca Knott with Principal Andrew Wren keeping time and students live tweeting from the event on the hashtag #barrow6hustings.

A Level Politics tutor Caroline Buckley said the students were busy preparing questions on a number of topics include tuition fees, the environment, NHS, Trident renewal and Brexit.

“Our students are excited to have a chance to have their say on the future of the country and are very motivated to vote in this General Election,” she said.

“Many are first-time voters and we have a range of political views and with the manifestos being rolled out over the next few days it will be interesting to see how the candidates respond when they are quizzed.”

Following the debate, the students will hold their own General Election by casting votes in a traditional ballot box to give them the chance to see how the process works.
