Thousands download free BAE Systems STEAM resources
Two Barrow-based engineers are celebrating after thousands took advantage of a series of activities they devised for children aimed at demystifying Science, Engineering, Technology, Art and Maths (STEAM).
Caroline Brown and Naomi Pulfrey developed the project, which has taken off in schools around Barrow over the last two years, after joining BAE Systems as graduates. When the pandemic began school visits were cancelled but, undeterred, the pair passed their material onto a free website to host the easy to follow lessons.
"We originally set up the activities for after school clubs to help non science specialists teach the subjects but still bring interest and enjoyment," Naomi said. "However since the start of the pandemic we're aware many parents have made use of the lessons."
Within weeks of the launch the page https://www.baesystems.com/en/careers/careers-in-the-uk/getting-ready-for-work/home-learning had attracted 2,500 views. 52% of viewers were female and the top locations for views were London, Barrow and Preston
Among the feedback the pair have received from parents is this note:
"I wanted to say a massive thank you to you both for the KS1 and KS2 BAE resources, I was off work last week with my 7 and 4 year old for half term – they absolutely loved the resources and didn’t realise they were learning at the same time!! Thank you both for the resources, it made learning fun, different and interesting."
"When we started out we wanted to show that anyone can get involved in science – it doesn't matter what background you come from," manufacturing engineer Caroline said. "Our aim is to show that art is as much a part of science as physics or chemistry and through this we hope to play a part in inspiring the next generation of engineers."
The news comes as BAE Systems prepares to support British Science Week (5-14TH March) a programme of activities aimed at raising awareness, sparking enthusiasm and celebrating science, engineering, technology and maths with people of all ages and from all walks of life.
