WAR ON LITTER: New Community Action Group launched to help clean up the Borough!

ZEST, a new community action group, has been launched to help clean up the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness.

The group plan on tackling community issues such as littering, dog fouling, graffiti and fly tipping.

Having already secured £2,535 of funding from the Barrow Community Trust to buy new litter picking equipment, the group have already organised 4 litter picking events:

  • Sunday 5th May - Red River Area: 10am - 11.30am from Tesco Metro towards Park House Farm.

  • Sunday 12th May - Salthouse Mills Area: 10am - 12noon from the Railway Bridge following the reservoir path towards the Port of Barrow.

  • Sunday 19th May - Channelside Area: 10am - 11.30am from the Dock Museum towards Furness College.

  • Sunday 26th May - Bow Bridge Area: 10am - 11.30am from the Abbey Mill Cafe towards Park House Farm.

A spokesperson for ZEST said: "It is well known that litter breeds litter; people are generally less likely to drop litter in an area that is clean.

"Litter comes in many forms. Take a look the next time you walk outside - you can't miss it. Cigarette butts, fast food packaging, crisp bags, cans and cartons, newspapers, ATM slips, chewing gum. You name it, and it's on our streets, in our parks and on our beaches.

"We believe that together individuals and community groups can help to discourage littering. The community clean ups will help to demonstrate that littering is not tolerated in our community, and encourages people to maintain the cleanliness of the area too.

"Of course we know it's not just dropping litter, it's opening your back yard gate, putting out your big screen TV, a few black bags and then shutting the door hoping someone else will make it all disappear. To keep our community clean, we need everyone to look at how they dispose of their waste.

"To get the 'War On Litter' started we have organised 4 community litter picks, both adults and kids are welcome to attend. We will provide litter pickers and black bags, but please bring your own gloves.

"We are aware there are some action groups already in the Borough and we would like to team up and share skills, knowledge, equipment and resources.

"Keep an eye out for 'Pick It Up Pete', he is going to be out and about in the community."
